The Art of Appreciation | #ThankfulThursday

I believe in the power of positive thinking. I believe no matter your circumstance, every person has someone or something to be grateful for. I found this infographic [see below] a couple years ago [please note, the information may no longer be exactly accurate]. I saved it to my computer so I could continue to be reminded that I should be grateful for many things I often take for granted: clean water, access to education, good living conditions, good health, and general safety. These things seem so basic, so rudimentary…it is difficult to imagine life without them. I think appreciation is an artform. It takes time to think about all we have to appreciate, but it is well worth the time commitment.

Though, it is not just the basics we should be thankful for. I think everyone should take some time each week and list the small things that make life beautiful, here are a few of mine:

Hand written letters.
Waking up two minutes before my alarm clock goes off.
Walking Riley the Pup in parks and on bike paths.

Flea market treasures.
Spontaneous dance parties with my best friends.
Lightening bugs and crickets on a hot summer night.
Kisses on my forehead.
Wearing goofy hats with friends.

The feeling of fresh contact lenses.
Driving down winding roads with the windows down and music blasting.
A book that is too good to put down.
When a song comes on the radio that depicts exactly how you’re feeling.
The smell of fresh laundry, especially when it’s still warm from the dryer.

So ask yourself, what are YOU thankful for today?

Here are some responses to the #ThankfulThursday hashtag on Twitter this week:

Friday Finds: 1 June

This Friday all my finds are dedicated to the 2012 summer games in London! I guess now is as good as time as any to announce that I was the recipient of a very unique scholarship from the Ohio University E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. While most of my time in Europe will be spent in London, covering the games, I will also be traveling to Dublin and Paris for a short while.

I am eternally grateful for the amazing opportunities I have been presented with by the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and the Institute for International Journalism, none of my meaningful travels would have been possible with them!

Infographic Find

I love a good infographic! Check out this one, it breaks down info about the London Olympics by year, with more great information about athletes, participants, medal wins by country, budget and more…so good!

Social Media Find

While I am traveling independently, throughout my time in London I will be tagging along with a group of Ohio University students studying sports reporting and international journalism. Be sure to follow @ScrippsLondon for all the latest updates from the group! They have an exciting agenda ahead, including meeting top sports correspondents and Olympic officials from the U.S. Olympic Committee, Associated Press, CNN, and more! (I will also be contributing tweets to their account, so be on the look out!)

Another great account to follow to keep up-to-date with all the Olympic happenings is @LondonLive, the New York Times official Twitter handle–reports from their own reporters and editors in London.

Harry Potter Fan Find

One attraction you can bet I’ll be stopping to get a photo in front of is the famous “Platform 9 3/4″ at Kings Cross Station, made famous by J.K. Rowling and her fictional boy-wizard, Harry Potter (as if you didn’t already know).

Cool Campaign Find

Proctor & Gamble is sponsoring a really great campaign to help support and to commemorate mom’s of olympic and paralympic athletes, Thank you, mom by P&G. According to their website, on May 8 they announced that P&G will help offset travel costs to the London Games for more than 800 moms of U.S. Olympians and Paralympians…how could you not love that story?!

While their home site is very well put together, I am really loving their Facebook page. There, you can view videos of olympic athletes and their moms, share your own stories about your mom and how she’s helped you become the person you are today, and much more! It is definitely worth checking out.

That wraps up all the finds this Friday! I’m still a little overwhelmed with picking which London hotspots and attractions I’ll be going to, please leave me a comment or two with your favorite places in London, including any hidden gems I might not otherwise discover! Thanks!

Creating Change in the Athens Community, One Click at a Time

My roommate, Annette Drapac, co-founded Project C: Clicking Creates Change last year with an equally talented partner in crime, Tony Guglielmi. Let me begin by saying that in the four years I have known Annette she has never ceased to amaze and inspire me. She is certainly a forced to be reckoned with and I am so happy to be a part of the project this year as they launch into the second year of production. I want to share my enthusiasm surrounding Project C, as well as feature the tremendous amount of work students like Annette and Tony put into projects of passion, with all of you!

Myself [left] and Annette [right] enjoying spring in Athens!

What is Project C?

Project C is a student-run multimedia project that ultimately donates funds to local nonprofit organizations. Students work together to create documentaries chronicling the activities of four local nonprofit organizations. Video documentaries, along with still photos, infographics, and feature articles are then presented on Project C’s website: www.clickingcreateschange.com.

The 2011 edition received the bronze award in the Large Group Multimedia category of the CPOY competition, as well as achieving placement as one of three finalist in the Adobe Design Achievement Awards, in the Browser Based Design category.

My Role in the Project

Primarily, I am working on the public relations team, promoting awareness of the project and community involvement, as well as fundraising efforts. I get to work with a talented team of marketing specialists, public relations students, and designers. Last year I was unable to work for Project C because I was in NYC interning at the Miss Universe Organization. This year I am ready to jump in, working to give back to the Athens community through Project C’s efforts! It has only been a couple of weeks and already I have worked to increase Project C’s Twitter following 13.5 percent, and their Facebook fan base 5.9 percent, as well as secure media placement in five community or student publications in southeast Ohio. And we’re just getting started!

In addition to working in public relations, fundraising, and marketing, I am participating as a content producer. I will write the story to accompany a video documentary and infographic created by a talented team of VisCom and Media Arts students at Ohio University. Our team is featuring the unsung heroes at The Gathering Place, a home that “supports the recovery of persons with mental illness by enhancing personal development and well-being, while fostering community involvement.”

Everyone Can Make a Difference. Learn What You Can Do!

The teams of volunteers at Project C work hard to bring you amazing, meaningful content. They hope to engage and inspire audiences, but everyone can do something to help out the Project!

With the click of a mouse, community members, as well as any other visitors to their site, can vote for their favorite organization. When users vote for an organization they are helping decide how to allocate funds to the featured nonprofits. This year, voting will take place from the time the site launches on Monday, May 28 until Friday, June 1.

Stay Connected with Project C

Join Project C in the social media spheres to keep up with all the latest happenings!

Get Involved

Just by telling your family and friends about Project C you’re making a difference in the Athens community! Project C strives to inform and inspire, and that couldn’t happen without the help of Project C supporters, and the ability each person has to spread the word about Project C’s work, mission, and the nonprofits in Athens, Ohio they are featuring, and hope to raise funds to support.

Donate

Whether you can afford $1 or $1000, Project C and the organizations featured this year will be forever grateful!

In 2011, Project C raised $1075 to assist the local nonprofits. This year the fundraising team aims to raise more than $2000. Project C is reaching out to charitable individuals like you for financial support. Online donations can be submitted via IndieGoGo, a digital crowdfunding platform at www.IndieGoGo.com/clickingcreateschange. Online donations must be submitted by Monday, May 14, 2012 at 11:59 PM PT.

Help us give back to the wonderful and unique community that is Athens, Ohio!
